Havensight Mall, St Thomas - USVI
A shopping treat awaits passengers visiting St Thomas in this ever popular open air Mall located at the cruise ship docks in Charlotte Amalie.
Famous throughout the Caribbean, Havensight Mall has an emphasis on jewelry, perfumes and electronics (cameras etc) and there are bargains to be had in the many outlets that you will find here.
On a list of things to do in the USVI a visit to Havensight should be near the top, provided of course that you enjoy shopping.
An open air shopping complex
Havensight Mall is a series of small shop units out in the open air in a gated area at the dock with just a few access roads for taxis and shoppers. It is a synch to stroll around at your own pace without getting the sense of over-crowding or the need to rush.
The complex itself is laid out in a square grid with all stores being easy to find without having to resort to using one of the maps that you can find at your ships excursion desk although it is worth having one of these as there are often coupons attached with discounts available. If your ship has docked at the Charlotte Amalie Port you can get a good sense of Havensight's relatively small size by taking a moment before you disembark to get up on deck which will give you a good view of the mall and its dimensions.
With around 100 stores to choose there is emphasis on jewelry, watches, cameras, perfumes and cosmetics. Mall Familiar names such as Diamonds International, Boolchands and Sunglasses Hut have outlets here and for any essentials that you may require the mall has a pharmacy, post office and a mini mart.
With competitive prices and a wide range of items Havensight Mall in St Thomas has become famous the world over for duty free shopping in the Caribbean. Just don't exceed your allowances.
Located close to both cruise terminals
If your ship has docked at the Crown Point Marina (located just around the corner), a short taxi ride toward St Thomas' downtown will see you pass the mall's main entrance.
It is more common however for your ship to dock at the main Charlotte Amalie Cruise Port (known as the West India Cruise Ship Dock) in which case you need only to walk down the gangway to find yourself right in the heart of Havensight.
Making the most of your time at the Mall
Get a head start
Most cruise lines will have a shore excursion department onboard with many having a shopping expert for itineraries that visit St Thomas. Via the excursion desk you can often pick up vouchers and coupons offering discounts in many of the stores and if your ship has a representative onboard he will often give a talk in the theatre prior to your visit and be on hand to answer any questions that you may have.
What to do if you don't like shopping
You will find a couple of bars and cafes inside the complex and directly opposite the main entrance (across the street) is a bar with pool tables that is quite popular with crew members as it is just next to a calling station.
Overall though, there is a lot more to see in St Thomas and Havensight is designed well to ensure a good shopping experience that will not monopolize too much of your day giving you enough time to explore the rest of the island.
Leaving the mall
The entrances/exits are located at the north end of the Mall.
To find one, simply turn your back to the cruise ships and walk down any one of the small car parks or walkways for about 200 metres until you can see one of the exits which will lead you out of the complex to Frenchman Bay Road.
